At a recent Wisereach breakfast briefing we invited a number of our key clients to gain an overview of some of the initiatives hitting the market to help scale Agile for larger firms. The high turnout showed that getting Agile working better is a key driver for many large organisations. While many have had success with smaller initiatives, most are hit with similar challenges when trying to scale the success. Key areas raised included financial processes, PMO structures and business engagement all being driven through a more traditional approach.
We discussed some of the benefits of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and how that is bringing a joined up view using Lean and Agile principles and practices to help scale up successful Agile initiatives. But it was clear that while SAFe provides a great starting framework, it remains critical to implement an Agile approach that works for your organisation. In larger firms, Agile is not just a new delivery method – it is a new way for the organisation to think about how to deliver more value quicker.
Any large implementation of Agile needs to be treated as a change event in the organisation, not just another technology driven development methodology. The real benefits of Agile are achieved through end-to-end change in your organisation - right from the top. For larger firms that is hard. It means changing your governance processes, business and technology engagement and altering many of the traditional ways in which you define and deliver technology solutions.
Building and maintaining an Agile mindset in the team is also critical. We were joined by ex-England Rugby Internationals Matt Perry and Andy Long who shared their approach to building High Performance Teams both at an Exec and individual team level in an Agile environment.
